Layout Master preferences

Layout Master features a user editable preferences window, for customizing how you work with the application. You can set up preferences for

Editing Preferences

To edit the preferences for Layout Master

1. choose Edit Preferences... from the Preferences menu

2. the Preferences window opens

To set the default grid for windows as they open

1. use the checkboxes and editors to set the appropriate values. This is the same as setting up the grid using the Layout Grid Editor

Note that changes here won't affect currently open windows, only windows which are opened after the changes have been made. To modify the grid for a window which is currently open, use the Layout Grid Editor for that Window.

To set whether positioned elements show their borders when editing the layout

1. click the checkbox labeled Show Positioned Element Border?

To set whether the background image for a page is shown in WYSIWYG mode

1. click the checkbox labeled Show Background Image in WYSIWYG Editing?

To set whether the preview browser comes to the front when you choose to preview

1. click the checkbox labeled Switch to Preview Browser?

You will probably want to uncheck this if you are using Live Preview

To set whether tooltips are shown for buttons in the Launcher, the Alignment and the Stacking editors

1. click the checkbox labeled Show Palette Tooltips?

To set the color of the resize handles of positioned elements when the element is selected

1. click the colored field labeled Element Selection Handle Color

2. choose the desired color for the resize handles using the color picker which opens

3. close the color picker

To set the color of the guides in the layout window

1. click the colored field labeled Guides Color

2. choose the desired color for the guides using the color picker which opens

3. close the color picker

With Layout Master you can choose to create elements in either XHTML or HTML. The differences are very straightforward, and in Appendix 4, we look briefly at this issue. The choice you make here will most likely only have an effect on how the <img> element is created by Layout Master. For maximum forward compatibility you should be trying as much as possible to work in XHTML.

Note that existing code is not converted from one format to another. Rather, this preference determines the format of newly created elements.

To create new elements in either XHTML or HTML format

1. click the radio button labeled XHTML or HTML
